President’s Message

We certainly ate well during the last quarter – and maybe saw a ghost or two.  In October, our own Gary White conducted a tour of some of Houston’s historic burial grounds as we commemorated Halloween and the fall season.  Lucette and Richard Reiger opened their beautiful new home to our membership and several guests in November for a Thanksgiving feast that we’ll not soon forget.  December found us at Bayou Place dining on a fine Mexican buffet at the Hard Rock Café.  The locale’s acoustic décor did not lend itself to a conversational meeting atmosphere so we simply adjourned to the outdoor veranda to conduct our business session.

Looking back over the year 2003, we were most fortunate to visit and experience a wide variety of tour destination sites in and around our great city.  The bar is set high for 2004 and I know our members will rise to the occasion as we seek new and worthy sites for our monthly meetings.  Please let any board member know of any ideas you may have.

Of course January is always reserved for our Annual Business Session.  We’ve booked the large CVB conference room on the ground floor of City Hall for the 15th.  Remember, networking begins at 6:30 and the meeting kicks off at 7 PM.  We’ll formally announce the results of our recent election of officers and board members and the passage of our bylaws amendment at that time.

We’ll present our plans for the coming year and encourage all to participate in every way possible.  Our quest for new members will continue to build on the momentum we’ve experienced over the second half of 2003 that’s seen us add four new Associates with two more pending as this is written.

(Presidents Message cont’d)

We are happy to see the staff of the Convention and Visitors Bureau take an even bigger interest in our association than before.  We have been asked to make a presentation at the Bureau’s Monthly Mixer slated for February 24th at the Petroleum Club.  This is an excellent opportunity for the PTGAH to showcase its talents and its contributions to the tourism industry.  There will be more details forthcoming about this major event in the very near future.  Please mark your calendars now and plan to attend!

Super Bowl is, of course, upon us and it seems that the entire city is doing double time to get ready.  Many of our members are engaged in various activities associated with the event and we look forward to helping put our collective best foot forward.  Don’t forget, shortly after February 1st, the hype will begin anew as we gear up for the Major League Baseball All Star game and associated events scheduled for July 10 through 14 at Minute Maid Park.  It’s gonna be a busy year!

Looking ahead just a bit, our February meeting plans (on the 19th) will feature a tour of Houston’s Museum of Printing History.  It’s a chance for a wonderful look back at how we actually record our lives.  Look for details on page 3.   Our March meeting plans (on the 18th) will feature a tour of an actual working ranch.  This, of course, dovetails nicely with the annual Houston Livestock Show And Rodeo set to kick off on March 2nd.  Details are still being ironed out but we’ll give you plenty of time to shine your boots!

Elsewhere in this newsletter you’ll find your Annual Membership Renewal Form.  Please complete it and return it with your check by the end of January.  (Note:  If you joined our association as a new member during the last quarter of 2003, the dues you paid at that time count for 2004.)

Remember also, if you are a Certified Member, your continuing education documentation must be submitted to Lynn Gaines prior to our January meeting.  Call Lynn if you have any questions.

Finally, thanks to outgoing board members Melissa Dixon and Sandra Lord for all their contributions to the PTGAH over the past 2 years.  Things sometimes got spirited in our monthly board meetings as we all strived to do what was (and is) best for our association but I believe the results speak well for the solid volunteer effort supplied by all.  Some other board members are shifting to other duties and we will welcome new leadership on January 15th.  Hope to see you there!

The JPMorgan Chase Building (formerly the Gulf Building) will celebrate its 75th anniversary in January with a series of events accessible to the public.   On Sunday, January 25, explore the architecture and history of the Chase Building with the GHPA Walking Tours Program.  The tour includes special visit to Jesse Jones' former office.  For details, go to www.ghpa.org.

THE TAYLOR-STEVENSON FAMILIES: A TRUE HOUSTON STORY
Sandra Lord, CPG

Augustus and John Allen aren't the only brother combination significant to Houston history.  Read the true story attached about brothers Edward and Horace Taylor, who arrived in Houston shortly after Texas became a Republic and whose descendants still are making a significant impact upon our city.

I am deeply indebted to Ellen Robbins Red, who, in 1986, wrote a book about her ancestors, Early Days on the Bayou 1838-1860: The Life and Letters of Horace Dickinson Taylor, Houston, Texas, privately published, Houston, Texas.  Look for it in a used book store.  I think you will find it well worth the search.

Other quotes about the Taylor-Stevenson family are taken from articles in the Houston Chronicle.

The Museum of Printing History celebrates the history of the development of printing, perhaps the most important of man’s cultural achievements. Its collection contains examples of ancient writing, pre-Gutenberg hand written rare books and manuscripts, antique printing equipment and tools, historically significant printed material such as bible leafs, government documents, early newspapers and periodicals, and, antique fine art prints. The Museum desires to provide an understanding of the history of printing and the consequential changes in civilization thereafter.

Experiencing the permanent collection allows one to chart innovations in man’s attempt to communicate beginning with writing on clay tablets, papyrus scrolls, and parchment manuscripts, through Gutenberg’s invention of printing and the subsequent production of important early printed volumes, into modern times with the production of the modern day newspaper. It also provides an explanation of the historical development of the various processes of creating artistic images in print, allowing for an understanding of the relief, intaglio, and lithographic production of fine art prints.
