Sandra is a certified professional tour guide, writer, researcher, trainer, and vocational historian who has designed and/or conducted over 2,500 guided tours for more than 28,000 people since 1988. She also has written, edited, and performed research for over 100 articles and books, most recently concentrating her efforts on downtown Houston. She owns Discover Houston Tours and is a member of the Greater Houston Convention & Visitors Bureau (GHCVB). A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Lord is a graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, spent her junior year abroad in Geneva, Switzerland, and has lived in France, England, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Montana, Alaska, and California. Since moving to Houston in 1984, she has been actively involved in learning more about her adopted hometown. In 1988, fascinated by Houston's history and drawing on her experience designing public tours for the University of Pittsburgh and The Franklin Mint, Lord began offering guided walking tours for individuals, children's groups, seniors' groups, Leisure Learning Unlimited, and other organizations. Since then, she has researched and designed hundreds of itineraries for walking and step-on tours and conducted training and educational programs for individuals interested in learning more about Houston. Lord has trained step-on guides for Houston's Museum District Day since 2001. She was chosen by the GHCVB to design and conduct a Houston City and Garden Tour for the National Tour Association in November 2001 and currently acts as a step-on guide for the GHCVB's monthly city tours. In 2000, Lord helped found the Professional Tour Guide Association of Houston, which meets monthly to determine the educational and experiential requirements necessary for the designation "Certified Professional Guide" in Houston. She currently serves as Vice President-Programs & Certification. Lord has published a Downtown Houston Tunnel Map since 1993.
